what is RISO printing?

RISO printing

RISO is a Japanese brand of duplicators and printers. When people talk about risographs, they usually refer to the duplicator series of printers. They are quick, easy and cheap to print from and perfect for mass printing.

Thanks to the use of soy inks, rice paper for the master print and the lack of a heating element, the machine is considered eco-friendly.

SO-RI uses a modern RISO EZ571e machine for printing up to A3 sized paper. Its stencil-based operation makes it somewhat similiar to screen printing.

colours

Printing with RISO usually means using pre-specified spot colours, one colour after the other. SO-RI offers a spectrum of different RISO colours. At the time of writing, the studio has colour drums with Black, Bright Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Purple, Fluor. Pink and Fluor. Orange inks.

Each colour has its own drum. Printing multiple colours is possible but requires us to put the paper through the machine multiple times with a different drum inserted each time. This makes registration a lot harder and misregistrations are quite common while RISO printing.

Because the inks are semi-transparant, you can overlay different colours, to create cool and new colour combinations.

half-tone screens and printing styles

The RISO machine allows you two options to choose from. You can let the RISO make the half tone screen for you, while giving you the option to choose the lpi (lines per inch) and screen angle.

Or you can make up your own half tone screen in your digital file (or work with a bitmap file) and have it print in grain-touch for your desired results.

The grain-touch option is also advisable when printing graphic work and texts.

If your text is exported as text (and not as an image) the RISO machine will automatically print it as line work for the best results.

multiples

Because of the stencil-based nature of the RISO printing process, it is well suited to print multiples of the same print.

The cost of the Master sheets would not really make sense to print a single copy of anything.

SO-RI suggests printing posters, flyers, zines and artist editions for the RISO technique to be an affordable and charming way to present your work or advertise your company, organisation or event.

imperfections

RISO printing is known for its lo-fi charm, so be sure to expect a lot of small and large imperfections. Registration marks will not consistently line up. Smudge marks from handling the paper quite often appear. Roller marks from the machine and ink residue from other inked paper might be visible. Most smudges and ink spots can simply be rubbed away with a rubber gum, just make sure not to rub over any inked areas. Try to avoid large inked areas in your design to avoid a lot of smudges.

If you’re not willing to deal with imperfections and misalignments, RISO printing might not be the thing for you.

extra info

1The ink coverage will slightly adjust the pricing, in most cases the print density is in between 0 - 66 %. If you use an excessive amount of ink per colour layer, choose 66 - 100%.

2Bringing your own paper is free, it saves me the hassle of stocking paper, buying paper, choosing paper, etc. And you get your own choice of paper. Please make sure that the paper is uncoated and heavier than 70gsm, but lighter than 230gsm and isn’t prone to losing fibers.

3Full price is for for-profit organisations, artists and graphic designers.
Discount is for non-profit organisations, starting artists, students.

4/5The number of pages should be a multiple of 4, if you’re printing A4, a multiple of 8 if you’re printing A5 or a multiple of 16 if you’re printing A6. The number of pages doesn’t include the cover. It’s impossible to print a regular zine that isn’t a multiple of 4 pages, use the numbers above to optimize your usage of the A3 sized paper.
